Ask HN: Why do companies offer AI Residency positions?

What are the differences (from an employer perspective) of an AI Residency [1] versus a Junior AI Research Engineer?

If someone is high potential but also high risk (b/c lack of AI experience), I can see the benefit of a trial period. On the other hand, the company invests resources to educate and grow the residents, with some risk of losing them to other companies at the end of the program.
