Are we absolutely sure this acidification is caused entirely by carbolic acid and not water treatment and industry?

We are in a hole and I'd like to know who's still holding a shovel.

As far as I understand it, it's an effect of lots of runoff finding its way into the sound, in addition to the overall acidification.
