Ask HN: How do you choose a programming language?

Many of us use multiple languages, but usually select one for the next project randomly (based on current interests, whatever is trending, etc.)

If try to summarize use cases for languages you know, what language decision tree for your next project will emerge?

Simple example:

(if graphical (elm) ( if a one time script (bash) if a frequently used script (nim) if for system level programming (rust) ))
