Ask HN: What kind of strategies do you use for Note taking?

I've been keeping a diary of things for a while now, and it's been quite good, lots of great nuggets of information that I often use as I remember I took note of it.

Some things however, I find I build up fractured pieces of information and searching through is a bit awkward, so a little while ago, for some information, I started writing "Guides" which are all the information I gather around a topic of significance ( something I know I will likely build up a lot of information about, otherwise I just put something in my diary). This is working out quite well.

I'm interested what other strategies people use to take notes / collect information? so, what things you take note of, how much information do you record, and how you organize the information.

I'm not so interested in tools, for me I keep the whole thing very low tech, I write very everything in very vanilla markdown with separate files for each guide and a file for my diary
