+1 for Simple Translate.

Simply select text, click the popup and done. I just wish there was option to quick change the output language (currently you can have like 2 target languages).

(I can't test now since I'm behind an evil proxy) seems like both are lacking the simplicity and elegance of Chrome's in-place translations

Well yes, when you (Google) control the entire vertical stack, you get nicer integrations like that.
