I had nothing but bad experiences with Mojave. Everything was noticeably slower, and stuff seemed to crash more often. This was despite the fact that Mojave shared a base with the very stable iOS 12.

Now we have Catalina, which shares a base with iOS 13, which according to numerous reports is very buggy... I don't want to touch Catalina with a ten foot pole. The fact that my copy of CS6 would stop working is icing the cake.

I should get one more year of security updates on High Sierra. Not sure what I'll do after that...

That's weird. Mojave has been rock solid for me, way better than High Sierra. But I guess mileages vary.

I'm not updating to Catalina either, I plan to stick around on Mojave until they release something that actually makes me want to upgrade. (maybe when Catalyst matures)

Mojave was a frustrating experience for me until I bit the bullet and did a clean install and remigrated my stuff. I doubt I'll do another in place upgrade again.

How do you do a clean install? Is this available from the recovery menu?

You write a bootable usb drive and format your hard-drive.

This hasn’t been necessary for many years as long as you haven’t had to replace the drive or lack an internet connection: just hold Command-R down at boot.

Yes, just go into Disk Utility in recovery and erase your disk. Then go back to recovery tools and install as usual.

I had nearly 9 months of very slow response times in Mojave but I suspected I needed to reinstall from scratch. I resisted doing so because I'd developed many dozens of dependencies that I didn't want to chase down (e.g. custom-compiled ImageMagick).

Doing the dreaded "clean install" fixed my issues (primarily a Finder that would routinely spend up to 30 seconds or more displaying the contents of any folder).

Up until Mojave, I'd never done a "clean install" on a Mac for performance reasons. Once doing so worked for my laptop, I followed suit on my desktop.

Did you have Adobe Creative Cloud installed by any chance? I had the same issue, and found out after several reinstalls that Adobe’s core sync finder extension was the cause.

No, but I did have Adobe CS 5.5.

Haven't reinstalled that software. It may have been the root cause.

It doesn’t share a base with ios13.

Much of the code is the same across the two operating systems.

iOS was forked from MacOS more than a decade ago. Of course some code is shared between them, but they do not have the same base in any sense of the word.

It’s really more than “some code”: the kernel, core frameworks, and many utilities are a single codebase with platform-specific #defines. I have no idea if there was an actual fork when iOS was being made, but if there was they merged the changes back in.

True, but there are a lot of elements of the system that are not shared but are pervasive, and so the assumption that the bugginess of ios13 somehow must also be in Catalina is not valid.

iOS 13 is driving me crazy. Between constant “prompts” to approve (and reapprove app permissions) and it losing permissions for some apps entirely I’m getting furious.

If you read those prompts, note how often those are asking for permissions used to track people which don’t benefit the user. The number of apps which ask for Bluetooth greatly exceeds the number which have any use for it, for example.
