One thing that does bother me about the Bechdel test is that it is represented as "passing is good enough". The Bechdel test intentionally sets a laughably low bar. Just because a piece of media passes, doesn't automatically mean that it is good representation for women, just that it is not so horrendously obviously unbalanced.
right? wanting to get recognized by passing the test is as absurd as wanting to be recognized by cleaning your room or something.
You have to wonder how many beloved chick flicks pass this test and what that says about its capability to disentangle some form of bias against female characters from the types of stories people generally like to watch. No doubt most straight romance movies will fail this test, but lesbian romance movies will pass easily. This probably isn't a coincidence given that Bechdel is a lesbian.
