Of course we evolved with hunger being a regular part of our experience and only in modern times can the gnawing feeling of hunger be avoided almost entirely by many people, or addressed immediately with a convenient food.
I am no biologist but my own experience and some reasonable assumptions would point to the idea that there are biological processes taking place during hunger pangs which are part of our overall energy systems.
I rarely eat breakfast, but not for metabolic reasons; I tend to sleep in and don't feel hungry until lunch time.
Really, though, do what works for you. But giving blanket advice like this isn't so great.
It's easy to overeat even with just two meals per day.
As for better cognitive facilities - I feel like a lot of that also can be achieved with being disciplined about sleep and getting enough of it. Nothing can really replace it.
