you could use something like xtermcontrol (http://www.thrysoee.dk/xtermcontrol/) and run it from your ~/.ssh/config file per-host:

     Host someproductionbox
          LocalCommand xtermcontrol --bg=red
     
     Host sometestbox
          LocalCommand xtermcontrol --bg=blue
