Given that jailbreaks exist and can be exploited by malicious actors, deploying them as the user and applying the jailbreak community supplied fix may be the best approach:

Can anyone confirm that older iOS devices are affected as well or was this introduced at a later point?

Don't remote root exploits (jailbreaks) exists for those devices? Then it's basically game over if anyone want anything already.
