I'd imagine it was far easier to be an unknown spy 250 years ago, and the passing of time is only likely to make it more difficult to establish her identity, bit like Jack the Ripper.
Presumably the British knew who she was if she was imprisoned, right?
That's just a rumor though, as the article points out, there are major problems with the imprisonment story
