Lo-fi hiphop beats mixed with live police scanners

Author of the site here. It's currently experiencing the HN death cuddle which is why the audio is sporadic (if it's even up). I built this as a portfolio app since I'm switching to front-end development (aka this baby has a garbage back-end) and wasn't really expecting it to be shared.

Glad people are enjoying it! It's inspired by Eric Eberhardt's youarelistening.to

Also, if anyone in Los Angeles is looking for a front-end engineer... karl.puzon[at]gmail.com :)

Used to like to chill to youarelistening.to but so much of the music that is on it any more grating experimental stuff on the opposite end of 'relaxing' in the ambient spectrum. This one keeps coming up to night as a good case in point - https://soundcloud.com/mayazimmerman/you-i-cannot-walk-away-...

Wouldn't be so bad if the next button wasn't also broken.

Looking forward to your site coming back up to check out.

Similar to Soma FM's SF 10-33 station:

https://somafm.com/sf1033/

" Live fire/police scanner audio from San Francisco processed and mixed with ambient and experimental music. A surreal audio zeitgeist of the city."

Beautiful.

I work at festivals from time to time. Listening to 10-33 reminds me of having the staff radio tuned to the medical channel when I am off duty at 4am. I immediately thought of it when I read the headline!

An old favorite combo i would use was similar.

1. live police scanner, typically sf

2. light thunderstorm sounds via rainymood.com

3. Blade Runner Blues

Feels incredibly film noir.

I remember the "original" rainymood pairing was with "The Fragrance of Dark Coffee:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMnrl0tmd3k

"Houston Street" works great as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt524wGJFqs

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qo4JIT8jMtI

3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RScZrvTebeA

dank. this cures my itch while the OP is suffering downtime.

If I could tune into these 3 combined on a 24hr loop as an internet radio station, I'd listen ever single day while coding. This is an amazing combo.

I set the rain one to 50% volume and it balances perfectly with the other 2.

Edit: It also works REALLY well with this instead of the Bladerunner music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebY7byYOwHI

There's a disturbing amount of domestic violence calls on the Chicago police radio.

Oh shit! that is so cool!

And if you don't want depressing violence and sadness, use any other radio like audio. I recommend Apollo 11 radio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DejhGSEu8wk

listentoamovie.com is also a great resource for mixing your own ambience.

SF may be down but New York is up. I love the idea of this. Technology remix culture used to create a Big Mood.

I'd like to request the addition of Chicago, please!

I was able to get New York to work, but then I foolishly switched to Portland. Now I can't get any of the scanners to work. It's just the music.

Chicago, St. Louis, and Oakland are coming next deploy... If it ever comes back up.

I love "Technology remix culture used to create a Big Mood". May I use this?

reminds me a lot of http://youarelistening.to/

YES! So glad someone else knows about this site. This was the main inspiration for it

That combo of ambient music and lo-fi radio transmission really reminds me of the Onion Moon Landing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIkHLO93lCA (warning: lots of swearing)

Heh. I'm currently listening tho the Number Station channel there.

Interesting, often while working I open apollo17.org and a Spotify playlist called Mellow Beats and play them together. It puts me in the right mood for coding.

That was awesome, thanks!

This is great

The scanlines and moving static are a very nice touch. Good work on getting front-end experience.

Thank you very much!

Looks like it’s offline right now.

Embrace of death, maybe?

definitely :|

filipino air traffic control, a smattering of rain and some micro house does it for me!

Very similar to a three-hour mix I often listen to while working: '3 HOURS BLADE RUNNER 2017 RAIN THUNDER & MUSIC with BLACKSCREEN' https://youtu.be/ArCqlpGVcIs
