We do, actually. But generally speaking, we found the legal system preferable to a well-deserved ass beating. Seriously, though, what would you suggest that does not involve "authorities" and some form of deterrent?

Why shouldn't food tampering be illegal? I believe it's illegal in almost all US states, and is a felony is some.

In many US states, tampering with food is a felony. That seems especially appropriate for this case since toothpaste can be toxic if consumed in large amounts.

The fact that there is no actual jail time might soften the blow just a little bit.

The victim reportedly vomited from ingesting the poisoned cookies. The ruling seems appropriate for ass-hattery that causes an actual injury. That's actually where many of us draw the line.

Why should anything which is not illegal be forbidden? If there's no law against it, it should be safe to assume society and community approve of the behavior according to your personal discretion.

No actual prison time. Being banned from social media for 5 years will probably have more impact in this case.
