Would you prefer an open source alternative or paid version of certain software?

Almost everything has an open source alternative. Eg: mattermost and Slack. We were in process of generating dashboards on tableau when a friend suggested superset from Apache- which would serve the same purpose. I still went with tableau simply because of more extensive use, so help available online, as well as its customer support and forums. I do have a preference for choosing softwares used by others to achieve same tasks - more results on google and better help online. Though I have seen a few firms opt for open source versions. What is your take on the same.
