Ask HN: Will cellular automata ever see use in “mainstream” AI?

I know that cellular automata can be used for modeling many kinds of problems. Are there certain classes of problems that are considered “artificial intelligence” that are better solved via cellular automata than symbolic or statistical/probabilistic means?
