How many people do that? If enough people don't do that and resets become normalized, then it's bad. It doesn't matter if you always do backups when switching devices if resets have been normalized to everyone you talk to, an attacker steals your number, does a reset, and none of your contacts question the reset.
Only on Android
Ah, I didn't realize that. I've only used it on rooted android phones.
Signal now uses the Android hardware keystore such that you cannot use a root app like TiBackup to move the Signal data around anymore. Instead you have to use Signal's built-in backup and then place the backup on the new phone and setup Signal again (generating a new ID key).
I've used both. You can use ti to move the signal specific backup over. Did this just a few days ago.
That seems nicer than the method without Ti requiring you to find the backup and move it 'by hand' to the right place on the new phone.
That's also somewhat recent. I was able to do that with my latest phone, but for my previous phone, the only option was a plain text export that removed any media, caused any group chats to be split and included in 1 on 1 convos, and obviously didn't have the crypto included.
