Software engineers, not cops and marketing specialists.

Seriously, I know that might sometimes make our work harder, but the answer to many of those questions is "we don't, it's none of our business." Except for crashes, making them opt-in is trivial.

Finding that crash root cause without server logs, great fun.

If it's a crash on the server, you should be logging it.

if it's a crash on the client, you should apologise to the user and ask if it's ok to send the crash dump to the supplier and give them an option to review the content and add additional information if they see fit.

CHOICE is not a forbidden word in 2019.

So logging on the server then makes it excusable.

In the age of Web apps how is that any different?

Because you're not exfiltrating data on a web server. It's already there!

So for the beloved web apps and ChromeOS it is ok, just for other platforms is outrageous.

And yet lots of robust software was shipped before always on internet and telemetry was a thing.

If anything telemetry gives developers an excuse to use users as QA.

Unless we are speaking about high integrity computing, robust is a foreign word to most software.
