Ask HN: Is a type system needed in a PL for 'safe' programming?
I am not debating the dynamic vs. statically typed languages here, but more my own personal journey with learning SPARK 2014 vs. my love of J and APL. This talk by Aaron Hsu on Dyalog APL "Does APL need a Type System?" [1] blew my mind partly because of my fascination with array languages - J, K, APL - but also because I started to reconsider programming a controls system in SPARK 2014, and turning to doing it in Dyalog APL. It is a personal project, so no exterior safety complications or concerns (yet!). Less concise languages benefit from types, since you can't see all of the code, physically in one screenshot, or mentally in your reasoning processes. The array languages can be revisited years later, and it is quick to see what the code is doing vs. having to re-read pages of typical code.
