Ask HN: May I work remotely while on a tourist in the USA?
I am sorry for using a throwaway account as the topic is quite delicate. I work remotely as a software developer for a company registered in some offshore zone. The work is completely legal, and I have a contract. It can happen that later this year I will have to visit the US for quite a long time period - about 3 months on a B1/B2 visa as a tourist. I have concerns about being able to legally keep working for the company while I am in the USA.
If it’s not legal and I still have to be there, I probably could stay under radars and work? I have my personal laptop and going to work in a rented flat where I am going to stay.
What are possible ways for local authorities to reveal my activity and what circumstances it could cause? Most likely it is going to be Miami.
If it’s a total no-go, I am not going to risk and would better stay in my country and try to achieve the goals of visiting US in another safer way.
Please share your experience with such situations, any advice is appreciated!
