Ask HN: What Happened to Placeholder.com?

A disappointment wrapped as a question:

Compare what placeholder.com looked like in in Sept of 2018 vs now after it was acquired:

Before: https://web.archive.org/web/20180902234223/http://placeholder.com/

Now: https://www.placeholder.com

Someone bought this nice little service that I've used from time to time and made changes.

Do these sort of changes actually make the site more profitable? What can motivate someone buying something so simple and clean and making it so confusing and dirty?
