I think the wayland devs aren't focusing on replacing absolutely everybody's X-based workflows, but on providing a reasonably engineered component that integrators can build a desktop environment on top of. In practice, we'll probably get a distro shipping a self-contained DE with a centralised hotkey setup, and I expect that will do the job for the vast majority of users. Maybe someone else is building a phone OS and using wayland for the graphical bits and the hotkey thing isn't even going to be on their radar.
