the word "maggot" has a disgust factor to it, i think "larva" would be free of the stigma. as an example, wasp larvae apparantly taste like scrambled eggs, and with some scrambling and frying would pass as tasty for most people not knowing.
i think there are some south american cultures that depend heavily on insect protien, as a personal experience there was this grad student from Ghana in the entomology lab that loved crickets. We had to dissuade him from eating supply house crickets as they are heuristically cultured and standardized thus expensive compared to petshop feeder crickets. Anoles love maggots, and they are easier on thier gut than mealworm larvae with thier hard plates [tegmata], birds take larvae readily, i think chickens would be a more aesthetic target for marketing than dogs and cats.
This just won't fly until this (western) generation changes its ideas about eating bugs.
