Ask HN: Does the avg karma function work?

I've noticed that my avg karma rating hasn't changed in weeks, despite numerous submissions and comments. It also appears a little low from my calculations. Is this feature working? Can anyone explain how it's calculated (i.e. comments vrs. submissions)?
