Ask HN: Can you suggest some projects to broaden my horizon?

I'm a systems level programmer and I also do some web programming. I was fascinated by emulators so I built one and learned a bit about how computers work. Any such other projects?

Maybe functional programming could be a good one. I've been fascinated with software cracking as well.
