When DuckDuckGo is set to a dark theme, the map is also in dark mode! To me, that is an incredible valuable feature.

Edit: which is a fallback to Mapbox, no Apple Maps feature.

It seems they're falling back to Mapbox when a dark theme is used, presumably because MapKit JS doesn't support any theming or styling of maps.

Good catch, I missed that. However, I guess that Apple will provide a dark mode for their map, too, at some point since they build dark mode into their OS(es?) anyway.

I'm sure this will come once @media(prefers-color-scheme) becomes more prevalent.

Won't take much time, since Safari betas already have it.

Maps on macOS already supports dark mode so it’s likely just a matter of time.

That's interesting because Apple Maps supports dark mode on the Mac[1].

It's also supported in MapKitJS as of the latest version (5.13.0)[1]

Check out "Darker Reader" extension... now you'll get that everywhere, automatically, with good looking dark colors.

I think it achieves that by leveraging color theory and CSS filters.

Once you try it you cannot go back :)

I am not involved in development nor devs are friends of mine, I just think it didn't get all the exposure it deserves.

PS if you're on chrome, after installing Darker Reader the infamous chrome white flash problem will mess with your eyes... Following thread has a partial solution to that:

as much as I love that extension, I prefer "native" dark modes (as in, provided directly by the website)

well, to that I prefer the capability of having a dark mode for every website, especially when the result looks good is beautifully readable.

If anyone wants this for Google Maps, try the Dark Reader extension for Chrome.

Here is how it looks on my machine: https://i.imgur.com/rpCiJSA.jpg

Not bad, not bad. The colored areas, especially that green would annoy me, though.

We can send people to the moon but we can barely get dark mode right :)

We can't currently send people to the moon, unfortunately. SpaceX is working on creating that capability in the next decade or so though and with there track record it might even happen.

Yeah the last person we sent to the moon was in 1972, so long ago that Eugene Cernan has since died at 82 years old.

Is there an updated version of this xkcd somewhere? https://xkcd.com/893/

No, but there are four left, so we're tracking just above the 5th percentile line.

I think I remember hearing something about the Apollo astronauts having higher-than-average rates of cardiovascular disease as a result of the increased radiation in space.

The sample size is definitely not large enough to make such a broad generalization.

I would imagine that there are more medical details than this to the story.

I think "Darker Reader" extension got it right finally...

You'll get dark mode everywhere, automatically, with good looking dark colors.

I think it does that by leveraging color theory and CSS filters.
