Another theory: people spend time updating their facebook status when they're home on vacation from college (spring break, beginning of summer break, x-mas break). Perhaps the break-ups themselves are evenly distributed but those are the most frequent dates for status-updates. It would be nice to see some data on frequency-of-status-updates alongside.
