Ask HN: The state of core software development?

I am still young, but I distinctly remember a lot of systems software being developed and sold/released in the past. Today, excluding fuchsia, a few programming languages, a few protocols here and there and a bunch of file systems, the industry seems to be in a backburner.. (Maybe into research??)

It seems that the development of software has completely shifted towards combined data science, web design and devops (not that it is a bad thing)

Do you know of any other similar projects?
