I can't be the only one that imagined that these people were in a free fall at terminal velocity and screaming.

But from the sound of it, there were many extra cables, nobody was in danger, and it seems like even the people didn't even fully realize that the elevator was going much faster.

This is as much a story about amazing elevator safety as it is about cables snapping. But hey, I don't write the headlines.
