Ask HN: How to choose a specialty

Over the last few months, I’ve been keeping a list of all of the programming project ideas I’ve had. After a couple days of intense research (sometimes a little more) for each one, I’ve abandoned them in search of the next big idea. I say to myself that “this one is the one I’ll work on for the next year”, but I never do for more than a couple of weeks (after work, not all day).

I envy the people who have chosen big projects to work on and have made major strides in specific areas.

Do you have any suggestions for focusing my efforts on one particular topic?
