If it's going to make NYC a major engineering hub, on a similar scale as Mountain View, then it's a huge deal. If it's going to be mainly non-technical roles, then meh.
And we're very small compared to the Search, Cloud, ads, Maps, etc. engineering presences.
Furthermore, the bizarre obsession with city “culture” is completely beyond me and has lead to some pretty regressive housing policies.
The only way to change it into as much of a monoculture as Silicon Valley would be to add tens of millions of tech workers, without adding any attendant employees to service industries. Not gonna happen.
I actually haven't come across any other broadly comparable cities in these sort of metrics.
At least, that's my first hand opinion.
