I teach part time. Lot of the anxiety and depression I see in kids seems to be thanks to this constant info overload on the net. Reddit/Youtube/FB all contribute in different ways.
14 year olds busy reading about the problems 35 year olds are facing on the net, is like dropping off your second grader in a tenth grade classroom and asking them what they think about the problems on the board. The natural reaction is to feel overwhelmed. Everyday they get hit with someother issue, someone is depressed or outraging about.
The best solution I have heard is to allow internet access, not on a device but in group settings (class room/living room etc). This way when they do get hit by stuff above their pay grade, there is someone around to process the stuff with.
But maybe the need did skyrocket, I don't have data to support either or both hypothesis
When the cost curve shifted because the price of communication crashed as people got on the internet, and the internet then become everywhere and cheaper, the demand curve shifted in response: with the price to setup a support group now is limited to a few hours and a facebook connection, basic supply and demand would say that we should get many more, which is exactly what we got.
In consequence we also get support groups for minor issues, or support groups for issues that are not so common.
I consider both a good thing.
Unfortunately we also got support groups for bad things: pro-ana (and thinspo), and debatable things (suicide pacts).
In meatspace if you want to set up a support group you'd have to rent a space, then participants would have to physically drive there, and your hours would have to coincide with theirs. It's not really fesible for many support groups to form in this environment, especially outside major metros.
With the rise of the Internet, you don't have those restrictions, thus people can reach each other, so they do more reaching out to each other.
Possibly internet support has taken the place of friends and family support though.
Now with the internet, it is is much easier to find wider scale and more specific groups so people are turning to these instead.
