Ask HN: What exactly does a Head of Engineering do?

I am planning to apply for a position of Head of Engineering (I am currently a Senior Developer and would like to move on to a more responsibility position? and with so many resources online, with different titles like VP of Engineering, the role and information is getting overwhelming. So what exactly does that role do? I know there are less coding or none at all. What tools are used usually? Excel? Word? Thanks!
