Ask HN: What are the absolute essentials to become a software developer

I am a mathematician who wants to get into software development. What are the absolute essentials bits to know from theory, application and coding guidelines such that one is able to do basic back-end or front-end development. Learning a whole CS curriculum appears very time consuming and is most likely not that practical or do I have the wong idea? How does one best approach such undertaking?
