While I don't have experience with large production systems, for hobby projects I found Nomad to be much easier to start with. Even the K8s distros that were supposedly "minimal" took a huge amount of time to setup in a reproducible manner. Plus Nomad's fantastic integration with consul makes it more than just a scheduler and a more complete alternative to Kubernetes.
