Apple News Ruined by IOS12

I’m curious, is it just me, my heart sank, when I saw the new side bar in Apple News, following the recent update, does anyone else feel the same? I truly detest navigation bars that cannot be collapsed - why on earth do UI designers think they have the right to steal large portions of my precious screen - just because I use my iPad in landscape mode?? It’s awful and a shame because apple reader used to be a very nice news browser.
