As much as a lot of tartan-lore is revisionist, selling pretty cloth to credulous tourists and Americans-craving-heritage is big business.
Fun fact, the majority of the "tourist trap" shops you see dotted up and down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh are actually owned by the same family. Who are originally from India, I think. The whole thing's pretty hilarious.
