Ask HN: Performance benchmarking Cloud VMs: What would you like to see?
I'm planning to to compare a few public cloud vendors(AWS EC2, GCP, Digital Ocean, and a couple more). What would you like to see in such a comparison?
Why?
Doing it for someone that needs recent results.
So far, I have on my list:
1. Internal network bandwidth and latency within zone & region. 2. External network bandwidth and latency. 3. CPU performance - single threaded and multithreaded workloads. 4. Memory bandwidth and latency. 5. Local disk IO performance at various small to big, and sequential to random workloads. 6. A few application benchmarks to give a wholistic view - web, database, logging etc.
What would you like me to add or remove to/from this list?
I intend to build it using Python, Terraform(provision VMs, and setup network), Ansible(test setup and execution) so that it can be reproduced by anyone on any infrastructure easily.
