I don't recall where I read it, but I've came across a concept to where the computer, then kernel, simply load your application and everything runs in this user or application space which takes all memory and resources to itself.
I think I've also seen rescue discs that use DOS for initialization but then the software takes over so that when you exit it just reboots the computer instead of dropping you to the shell.
