Japanese children are notoriously independent [0]. Very different from the US.

That would not surprise me since little kids often take the subway themselves to go to school at age 5 or 6

What is it that you fear would happen to them?

Primarily that they'd embarrass me by ganging up and picking on robots.

But besides that that they'd do something stupid, or wander off, or something else along those lines.

I don't think this is just a US attitude, either - when we lived in Italy, we wouldn't have let our kids wander around the mall there, either, nor would other parents.

Yes, and it's normal here where I live (in Europe) as well. I used to always go to the toy store while parents were shopping.

It used to be normal here in the US....
