A consulting company I worked at a few years ago had an "Interactive" team whose "UX" designers used exclusively Material Design for everything.
It was...something special. Everything was just sort of cobbled together with zero creativity about it.

Unless the goal is to create art, consistency is a great thing for both users, who can eventually learn what's going on, no matter how bad the metaphors, as for developers, who can grow beyond checkbox-of-the-week towards well tested patterns.
