I extracted the TTFs from the package, if you want to try them on other platforms: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B4NmQa1UbwBCOGMzN2U3ZjItOTI...

Package for download:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/ttf-ubuntu-font-family

I came here for this, thank you.

I like it, nice and clean.

I'm not sure how I feel about the lower-case f, but I love how the l, i, and j are all easily distinguished from one another, and the font looks generally pretty darn pleasant.

In my layman opinion it looks bit too stylized for body text. But probably works much better in UI elements.

mmm....I find it hard to read as body text...the words all seem to run together.

I'm studying Japanese now, and I wish it got the same love. One high quality sans-serif libre font would be enough. I guess most non-Latin character sets suffer as well.

It's a work in progress. As far as I know they are planning to extend it to support more scripts.

I am also very much looking forward to a monospace version.

Another vote for seeing a monospace version.

What are you using now? Bitsream Cyberbit? VLGothic? WenQuanYi Micro Hei?

Kind of weird that font.ubuntu.com doesn't just offer .ttf files or other easy downloads.

Apparently they're still polishing up the font, so the Ubuntu guys offer it as a package for easy upgrading. That's my guess at their reasoning, anyway.

That's correct. They even considered delaying a release like this because it's not 100% finished and they didn't want too many versions of the font in the wild.

Excerpt from the wiki:

"Please do not try to download just the .deb or .tar.gz on its own; the test fonts change weekly (normally on a Monday) and having old copies of broken/superceded versions is producing incorrect bug reports. Even worse documents are ending up with the out-of-date fonts embedded in them."

What is the license for this font?

"UBUNTU FONT LICENSE Version 1.0": http://gist.github.com/601425

Thank you! Was that listed somewhere on the linked font.ubuntu.com site?

Not that I saw. It's in the .tar.gz available on the package linked by zeemonkee.

Totally Awesome!
