Carmack did the original XFree86 3.3.x port to Mac OS X Server beta back in 1999 (Which still had the OpenStep GUI!). This eventually evolved into the XFree86 mainline, and then into XQuartz
How strange. I could have sworn I was replying to Didn't Carmack himself port it to OS X? What is now "XQuartz".
