The fact that you can't read messages (without switching to 'desktop mode') on their mobile web app is such horse shit. Yuck.

For now you can still read and write messages on https://mbasic.facebook.com - fast, pure HTML, no JS.

Either that or you can go to the basic version at mbasic.facebook.com for an even poorer (though somewhat better in some senses, like having messages integrated) experience.

Well, it definitely beats having to navigate the desktop version on mobile. Thanks for the link!

imposing `messenger` on all of us because they know none of us would use it if we had a choice

I just graduated college and pretty much all of my friends and everyone I knew there used Messenger as default for text communication. There's plenty of other alternatives, but that's what people seem to prefer. It's a pretty decent app and in my opinion way better than the old built in FB messaging.

I'd prefer to use Signal and my family uses it to communicate but it's definitely not as nice as Messenger.

Yes, it's a tactic to get you to install that app so they can mine your calls, texts, and contacts.

Well no... there's nothing technically stopping them from supporting messages on mobile.

This is what they do on mobile:

* Lie to you about how many messages you have

* Ask you to install an app to see those messages

* Upon installing the app, give them permission to mine your data
