Coming soon: 128GB RAM in a laptop! Don’t really need it, but I _want_ it!

View on HN

Dell Precision 7730 can do 128GB RAM:

Then, now I realize I want 256GB :-)

Is selective power off for individual DIMMs a thing? Not sure I want the power consumption of 128GB when I don't need it.

Does more RAM use more power?

It should, since the banks need to be constantly refreshed. I think the bigger power consumption for standby phones is RAM.

SRAM (not DRAM).

Looking at this analysis, it seems the cellular radio is the largest consumer of power in standby, with RAM being minimal:

It looks like you are correct. I wasn't truly sure of that statement when I made it. It was just mis-remembering something heard in the lecture here[1] and somehow I formed the idea that RAM is a big consumer in standby mode (even though the lecturer did not make such a claim)

Yes, DRAM cells have to be refreshed every 60 ms or so. More RAM means more cells to refresh which means more power consumption.

Yes, although if we're talking about improvements in RAM density (lithography improvements) rather than just putting more equivalent RAM in a machine, then that tends to mean lower power consumption per bit.

I don't think so, unless you own an IBM mainframe that allows you to hot swap even CPUs (as long as you disable them first and allow the OS to migrate threads to others).

I would LOVE that.. Not that any apps require it, but I could host an entire virtualized stack locally. Big Win in my book.

Data science / statistical applications. Nothing better than the laziness and speed afforded by bein' able to load large datasets into memory.

I have a Lenovo with 64GB RAM which is really handy for consulting: separate VMWare images for all clients and the ability to do Sharepoint dev work (separate VMs for SqlServer, SP, Visual Studio) with enough memory left over for Chrome...

Just wait until all the apps on your PC get updated to use Electron.

128GB? Pfff, I still can't do my genomics Deep Learning blockchain with it!

To be buzzword compatible, you need to do that In the Cloud™ anyway.

As a developer myself, I know how I could put 128GB or more to good use. I certainly would love more RAM...
