I’d have never thought it’s so customizable: in the store there is an app for xmpp chat with a fb-like ui (very popular amongst my younger friends) and the social aspect can be managed by Circles [https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/circles], control over visibility and permissions is included.
Of course, it does not scale to millions of users, but that’s the point. The approach is a middle ground between “delete social media” and “own your own domain”.
