Ask HN: Why do employees not disclose their salaries in USA

Why is it common in USA for employees to not reveal their salaries to other employees. This seems like a taboo here. If employees would share salary information openly it benefits the employees. By not sharing the salaries openly it only benefits the employer.

What can be done to solve this problem.
