As a Texan of color with relatives all over the state, I believe a lot of Texans don’t care about skin color AND a lot of Texans don’t care about discrimination based on skin color. So as an immigrant of color, you might be better off in a society where the supermajority actively espouses inclusion (even if they don’t practice it well).

I grew up in Kansas — never had any idea there were psychos like this shooter. Part of me feels like he's such an outlier that he could exist in any state.

There is certainly more "whiteness" though in the Midwest and less exposure to "brown skin" so maybe the likelihood of these racists is higher.

On the other hand you gave me, a person of color who moved from New York City to exurban Minneapolis and couldn’t be happier about it.
