Kodi (XBMC) architecture is the first thing comes to my mind as a best example for cross-platform application architecture.

I've amazed by the seamless performance of Kodi in every platform I've tried it in. But recently when I tried the android version of Kodi on Celeron N3060 based ChromeOS, unfortunately HW acceleration wasn't available and it reported the CPU as ARM. I wonder whether it has to do with intel houdini ARM instruction translation, other android apps report correct CPU and HW acceleration works in chrome browser.

Perhaps you downloaded one of the two ARM versions of Kodi. Maybe try the x86 one from here?

Thanks that could work, but I haven't unlocked developer mode for security reasons; so side-loading .apk isn't possible.

Anyways, I'm quite sure it's an issue on ChromeOS side. Apart from streaming like Youtube, Netflix; there seems to be no HW acceleration in default video player itself.

My old modded Xbox still works and boot straight to XBMC.

I use Kodi on my Raspberry Pi as a media player, and it seems to do everything now. even PlayStation Vue works on it.

I wonder if this means that PlayStation Vue will work on Xbox One now...

I have my old xbox around here somewhere. For its time, it was an unbelievable unit, and the modding scene was amazing. The last modded xbox I gave to a friend had an LCD scroller and a bunch of really annoying lights.

What did the LCD display?

Usually temperature, free disk space, network io (anything the patched bios and os could reasonable get at). Once the ability to flash via JTAG (and eventually via in-game exploits), the Xbox became a really fun homebrew target.

yeah, subway pretty much summed it up. It was one of those mods I thought would be cool until I had it... then it was pretty much useless since I sat far enough away that I couldn't read it.

Such a fun system, though. I really miss running a MAME emulator.

Heh, I had soft-modded the original Xbox via the plug-the-running-harddrive-into-another-system trick. XBMC ran great on it for a while, until one day popping in a new game disc it auto-updated the dashboard and un-modded itself :(

If we would all be honest Kodi is pretty much exclusively used for content which was not attained via approved distribution channels.

As such I would be actually hesitant to run it on a device like the Xbox One; especially in a country where the use of alternative distribution channels is actively prosecuted.

Plex is basically the same and is also widely used on the Xbox, and has been available on its store for some time.

I use Plex and I don’t use it on the Xbox for the same reason; I don’t have any control over the data collection from it and technically it’s a violation of the EULA which can be used to have my XBLA account suspended, while this is a small risk it’s still not worth it considering the number of affordable NAS appliances that come with HDMI, support Plex and 4K playback as well a plethora of other affordable platforms ranging from SBCs to NUCs and streamers.

And lastly while Plex did implement channels Kodi is effectively used as an interface for PopcornTime like services where you can directly stream from Torrents and other sources.

Plex is nice, but it requires a server with content. In addition to the tons more plugins for Kodi, it can play media directly from a network share without any media server running. This is a big benefit for client only networks.

I prefer the server/client model Plex provides, but for me Plex has been much more buggy than Kodi.

What kinds of bugs? It's been pretty bulletproof for me, including playing 4K content. I love that my 4K TV has the Plex app built into it from the factory.

What country is that? I don't think they bother with the prosecution in North Korea.

There are legitimate uses. The video plugins are great, for example. I can watch PBS shows in a simple browsable interface as opposed to going on their website. You still get the commercials and everything, but it's much easier to browse content.

Yes there are but they don’t even dwarf compared to the illegitimate usage they effectively do not exist.

I’m sure you watch PBS on your Kodi box, but I’m also sure you watch a lot of other content.

You also forget that Kodi is also heavily used to easily access content behind geoblocks so while I would assume there are plenty of people that use it because the interface is neater than that of the BBC iPlayer a very large portion of them would also be those who aren’t in the UK.

Those issues are true for any device. The xbox isn't particularly different. About the only difference that I can think of is the amount of metadata leakage to MS or other third parties. Since you don't have much control over any of these proprietary walled garden type OSes, you risk additional leakage. I doubt if this sort of leakage itself can be used for prosecution. It's more likely it's used just for data mining.

You’re probably right, but the reason why isn’t because of anything Kodi developers did wrong. Film distributors refuse to allow DRM-free files to be transferred. So my Kodi has a mixture of ripped DVDs (illegal), ripped Blu-rays (illegal), iTunes video with DRM stripped (illegal), and films I couldn’t legally find in the US and had to pirate.

I thought ripping your own DVDs was explicitly legal.

Depends on where you live I guess? It never came up in court here but I imagine breaking the encryption is not legal.
