Ask HN: Is Bitcoin scalable like Visa?

I've read that Visa processes a few thousand transactions per second, but bitcoin is significantly less than that (tens of transactions). If bitcoin was to go mainstream, wouldn't this on its own be a serious limitation? Is there a way round this?
