M5 – The Next Generation of General-Purpose EC2 Instances

Hey AWS, when you release new generations of instances, please make RIs for the generation it's replacing upgradable to the new type.

I understand customer service upgrades the RI as needed, but I don't get why the upgrade path is just not straight up there, especially if you want to retire the older instances sooner. I literally purchased an m4.large RI three days ago.

For those in similar situations, reach out to your account manager or support; it’s likely they’ll help you out.

That said, OP is correct. It’s abjectly ridiculous that you have to do this.

Amazon unwisely failed to consult with William Shatner first; as he would've attested, M5s are not safe for use in Enterprise computing environments.
